CORK FOOTBALL CLUB OFFICIAL CLUB RECORDS 1880 - 1885

This booklet forms the original notes of the club secretary William Evans and possibly others from September 1880 to February 1885. It contains team line up and notes relating to matches played by the Cork team and Munster. Included in the booklet are newspaper cutting relating mainly to matches played by Munster.

Included amongst the newspaper cuttings is the great Munster victory by one try to nil over Leinster on 4th December 1880. This allowed the Munstermen 6 committee members on the IRFU main committee. It is interesting to note that the booklet contradicts recorded Irish history. Charles Mulqueen in his 1983 Munster history states after the 1880 victory over Leinster that.......

"the Munstermen, flushed with success, sent a team under William Goulding to Wales. Edmund van Esbeck records in One Hundred Years of Irish Rugby. 'They played three matches, one against Newport, which they lost, one against a South Wales XV, which they also lost, and they ended their campaign on a successful note by defeating Neath"...........

This scarf was issued to the All Black legend Sir Colin 'Pinetree' Meads. it was 'hanging' off his bag as he entered the Seabank Hotel in Porthcawl during the 1963 tour, one eagle eyed supporter watched closely as the scarf fell to the ground and the legend walked on oblivious to his missing kit. The supporter immediately picked up the scarf, run along and caught up with Colin and offered it up to it's rightful owner. Well that's what he should have done but instead he stuck it up his jumper and added it to his collection of memorabilia. Thankfully he's now donated it to the museum. The scarf measures 11" x 80" (29cm x 204cm) and has a few moth holes.

SPRINGBOK TRAIN HEADBOARD

Whilst touring New Zealand in 1956 the Springbok rugby team travelled the length and breadth of New Zealand in special trains. There were two different trains used by the tour party, one on the North Island, one on the South.  Each train had a special hand painted headboard attached to the front. Pictured below is the North Island headboard. NZ railways could find no further use for the headboard once the tour had finished, it was acquired by a New Zealand train driver who then added it to his already sizeable rugby memorabilia collection. Here it remained in his collection until 1995 when it was purchased by the World Rugby Museum.

SUPPORTERS TRIP FRANCE v WALES 1963

Supporters trips are all part of rugby's colourful history. The Six Nations Tournament has a fantastic history of trips with even a film being made about one. 'Grand Slam' starring Windsor Davies and Hugh Griffith is part of Welsh rugby foklore. It ranks alongside John Hughes groggs, Max Boyce records, and Gren cartoons as one of Welsh rugby's icons of the second golden era of Welsh rugby, the 1970s and relates to a trip in 1977.  Pictured here is a passenger contract for a group of 55 Welsh supporters travelling to Paris for the 1963 encounter with France. These 55 hardy souls were in a crowd of 35,000 who witnessed a 5-3 defeat for a Clive Rowlands led side...................
