2009 BRITISH & IRISH LIONS TOUR OF SOUTH AFRICA
|
BRITISH & IRISH LIONS 2009 - MATCH HIGHLIGHTS - WITH PRIDE (DVD) |
|
|
It will be remembered as one of the great test series in
rugby history as the British and Irish Lions came within millimetres of
defeating World Champions South Africa on their own turf.
In the land of the big game hunter, this was one that got away just! Three pulsating Test matches of ferocious intensity, compelling and controversial at almost every turn. Ian McGeechan's heroic squad were decimated by injuries throughout the tour but still claimed a magnificent final Test win in the Springboks' Ellis Park fortress. The first Test in Durban was lost 26-21 despite a stirring late comeback. The Lions had to win in Pretoria and did everything in their power in a brutal but breathtaking collision. Rob Kearney's early try and Stephen Jones' faultless kicking carried the tourists to the cusp of a magnificent triumph - only for Lion hearts to be broken in the final seconds by the long range boot of the nerveless Morne Steyn. Paul O'Connell's side regrouped and responded emphatically in Johannesburg, thrashing the Boks 26-9, scoring three tries to none. The series was lost but the performance said everything about this pride of Lions. With action from every game of the tour, extended highlights of the first two Tests plus a bonus disc of the extraordinary final Test match in full - this is the Lions in South Africa 2009 |

In 1997, Living with Lions - the behind the scenes
story of the British & Irish Lions Tour of South Africa - was acclaimed
as one of the greatest sports films ever made. Now, 12 years on, the Lions
are back in South Africa and so are our film crew, recording every minute of
what was one of the greatest Lions Test Series of all time.
With unprecedented access to all areas of the Tour, Living with the Pride is the most intimate, honest and intense portrait of life as a Lion ever produced. From the Pennyhill Park training camp to the magnificent final Test victory in Johannesburg, this is the inside story of how players who are normally the fiercest of opponents turned themselves into a band of brothers desperate to restore pride to The Jersey. Their gruelling 10-match tour of the World Champions' back yard asked questions of the players' mental and physical strength like never before. Lions legend and Head Coach Ian McGeechan worked closely with our film crew to make an astonishing no-holds-barred documentary. With access to every player, an open door to every team meeting, training session, selection meeting as well as excusive access to the passion, fury and ultimately elation of the Lions dressing room, this is a unique and uncompromising insight into life on a Lions Tour, described by Tour Manager Gerald Davies as 'The last great adventure in rugby'. No Lions Series has ever been closer, with many commentators describing the second Test as 'the greatest rugby match ever'. Sometimes hilarious, but often brutal, bruising and moving, Living With The Pride is the official and exclusive behind the scenes story of one of the most exhilarating, emotional and memorable sports tours of all time. |

This is a superb souvenir of the tour of South Africa in 1938. Complied by David
May, Cape
Town 1938. We assume that this is the baggage master or physio named as
"Mack" in a 1938 squad photograph. He is pictured far left of the
photograph on board the Stirling Castle. Each player was presented with a
scrapbook after the tour. This scrapbook was the property of FJ Reynolds. The scrapbook has a hardcover
and measures 47 x 32 cm, the illustration of the scrapbook itself has a loose A4
sheet of paper on top, this is just to give you some idea of the size of the
book :- The first page includes real photograph of the team on board the R.M.M.V Stirling
Castle, their outward bound trip signed around the edges by the complete tour
party, 31 in total. The remaining pages contain many newspaper clippings of the
tour, each clipping has been numbered with pencil. Also included with the
scrapbook are the joining instructions from the RFU secretary SF Coopper with a
handwritten note "Each team member to receive 7/6 per day as pocket
money" a South African car number plate identification wall chart and an
extremely attractive charcoal and pencil caricature (size 16" x 10",
39cm x 26cm) of Reynolds. Ref: PL10-npbkbr38-fjr - £1945.00

- BRITISH TEAM TOUR OF AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND "Souvenir of Twenty Years Football" published
by Walter E Knott, Christchurch This booklet was
'Published in conjunction with the visit of the British team to New
Zealand, August 1904. It contains an article on the game 'Some points in
Rugby Union Football for the Uninitiated', plus many photos, 1904 British,
NSW, Queensland & TeAute College, NZ squads, 1904 British team, 1899
British Team, 1888 British team, NZ Natives 1888/9, NSW in NZ 1901, NZ
team 1884, NZ v Australia 1903 action, double page panorama, NZ team 1893,
NZ Team 1896, 1897, 1901, 1903, Government Reception to NZ team 1903,
South Island team 1902 & Canterbury team 1901. The booklet was
occasionally published as a match programme. This is an original copy
published in 1904, it has a tape repair to the spine both inside and out,
some light wear and a few pages are loose. The booklet comes together with
a modern reprint of the publication which doubled as the Otago &
Southland v British team match programme. The reprinted copy is identical
to the original apart from the
match details printed on the inside front cover (the original copy is
blank) and the Canterbury 1901 photo at the end of the booklet has been
replaced by an Otago 1902 photo. Two items in total Taranaki v Gt Britain souvenir badge/ribbon. This ribbon
would have been attached to A supporters lapel by a pin, if you look
closely to the top of the illustration you will be able to see a couple
of pin holes. The fact that it does not mention Taranaki's partners in
this match Manawatu & Wanganui leads us to believe that this is a
commercially produced ribbon and not an official issue. Ribbons were
sometimes issued to committee members, players and officials that were
worn as passes into stadiums, functions etc, this practice was more
common in the Northern Hemisphere than the south. The ribbon is 11 cm
long and has adhesion marks to the reverse where it has been held in a
scrapbook. Ref: F78-25-br04ri-tar - £350.00 A match ticket for the first ever official New Zealand v British
Isles international. A complimentary ticket which allowed Mr E Marks
access to the grandstand (reserved section). There is an ink stamp to
the front, we are unsure what this is for, possibly the issuing
authority, it does have 'The, Wellington, Park & Company on it'. The
ticket has been previously contained in a scrapbook and has a newspaper
cutting stuck to the reverse.
Ref: F78-32-tkbr04nzxb - £850.00 An eight page booklet / menu card for a 'Picnic to the
British Footballers by The Metropolitan Rugby Union at Hawkesbury River,
30th June 1904. The booklet contains photos of the British squad (in
civilian clothing), Sydney Cricket Ground and the Metropolitan Rugby
Union Committee, a page listing 'office bearers' of the MRU, toasts,
programme of events and menu. The spine has split on this booklet and
the covers and presentation ribbon are loose. Ref: F78-35dmbr04 - £450.00 BRITISH ISLES TOURS 1888
