SUPPORTERS TRIP FRANCE v WALES 1963 Supporters trips are all part of rugby's colourful history. The Six Nations Tournament has a fantastic history of trips with even a film being made about one. 'Grand Slam' starring Windsor Davies and Hugh Griffith is part of Welsh rugby foklore. It ranks alongside John Hughes groggs, Max Boyce records, and Gren cartoons as one of Welsh rugby's icons of the second golden era of Welsh rugby, the 1970s and relates to a trip in 1977. Pictured here is a passenger contract for a group of 55 Welsh supporters travelling to Paris for the 1963 encounter with France. These 55 hardy souls were in a crowd of 35,000 who witnessed a 5-3 defeat for a Clive Rowlands led side. The party who are believed to originate from the London Welsh club were led by Marcus Caan, an employee of BOAC and a former actor. Caan appeared during the 1940s with amongst others Richards Burton and Stanley Baker when he toured the theatre circuit. Caan appears as number 37 on the passenger list, just above J Matthews (is this Jack ?). It is unknown when Welsh supporters starting making trips to Paris and Dublin on chartered airlines. The ill fated 1950 trip (see Ireland v Wales 1950 page for more info) is the earliest that we know of, Can anyone out there help with information on supporters trips earlier than 1950 and is there anyone out there who was on this 1963 trip or has a photo of this supporters group ?
