Also
a very big thank you to Paul Shanks for supplying the following
info................................ I
believe that the cast may have been as a result of the infamous
dislocated ankle Ieuan received playing against Cardiff on 1
October 1994. I recall seeing it on the TV the ankle was
facing the wrong way!!
Extract from the Independent on 12
October 1994:
"The Welsh selectors will have to find a new right wing and
captain when they sit down tonight to pick a team to face Italy on
12 October, following the horrific injury to Ieuan Evans at
Cardiff Arms Park.
Evans dislocated his left ankle and fractured his fibula after
running into a barrage of Cardiff defenders, and had to undergo an
operation at Cardiff Royal Infirmary to have a metal plate screwed
into his ankle.
It means the man who last month broke the Welsh try record with
his 21st touchdown in the 16-9 win over Romania *******will
be in plaster for six weeks******
and out of action for at least three. "
Extract from the Independent 2
October 1994:
"WALES were dealt another serious blow to their preparations
for rugby union's Five Nations' Championship and next year's World
Cup when their right wing and captain, Ieuan Evans, sustained a
fractured fibula in his left leg in Llanelli's Heineken League
fixture at Cardiff, which they lost 28-8. Evans was brought down
in the 25th minute of the game while embarking on a counter-attack
out of defence and the dislocation of his ankle was clear to see
from the stand.
Last night, Evans had an hour-long operation at Cardiff Royal
Infirmary to have a plate screwed into his ankle".
Evans received credit from Danny Cipriani (right ankle) after he
suffered a similar fate in May 2008 - Ieuan made a number of
supportive phone calls, offering words of advice and
encouragement.
Children in Need was held on 25 November 1994........................ I
think Neil and Paul are absolutely spot on with the date of the
injury, 1st of October, The timing is right for the plaster, the 6
weeks would end in mid November. Children in Need was on the 25th,
yet the match against South Africa was played on the 26th. I think
it is unlikely that Ieuan would have had the cast signed at the
post match dinner because there are no South Africans on the cast.
Possibly it was signed at a pre-match get together or a squad
session in the week leading up to the match. Our next task is to
check the autographs on the cast against the Welsh team for the
South African match to make sure they match up. Help
! We would like more information - we are searching for:- A
