ENGLAND RUGBY JERSEYS

ENGLAND 1963 v WALES - PETER JACKSON JERSEY

A No 14 England international jersey from the collection of Clive Rowlands, Wales 1963-65. This jersey was worn by the Coventry winger Peter Jackson in Clive's first match for Wales against the old enemy at Cardiff Arms Park. Clive captained the Welsh team, as he did on each of his 14 appearances for Wales. Clive wanted to keep his first Welsh jersey and so that he could have an English one as well, Clive's club mate Dewi Bebb, Jackson's opposite number kindly swapped his jersey and presented it to the first cap man so that he would have a pair of jerseys for his first international.

ENGLAND 1967 v CANADA JERSEY - PETER LARTER

A No 4 England international jersey from the collection of Bob (Robert) Brewer, Canada 1967. This jersey was worn by Peter Larter in the Canada v England match at the Empire Stadium, Vancouver on 30th September 1967. Although Peter Larter appears as No 5 in the programme Bob is almost 100% sure that that he exchanged jerseys with Peter. The ESPN website confirms this with Larter appearing No 4 on there. Bob pointed me in this direction when I quizzed him about the number difference on the programme, he replied:

" I am puzzled by this as I clearly recollect swapping shirts with Peter immediately after the final whistle (as one did in those days). I have looked at teams which ESPN show on the internet and they show that Larter was wearing number 4, as was I, but as you say, the programme clearly shows Larter as number 5...............

............ As it was nearly 52 years ago now, I would not guarantee my memory, but my inclination is to say that the programme is incorrect. What is not in doubt is that the shirt is from that march in Vancouver in 1967. (Incidentally, I don’t know if you have read the Biography of Budge Rogers, who played in that match, but in the book they have a photo of the England touring team with the wrong date – 1968!)."
