FRANCE 1963 JERSEY - WHITE - PIERRE LACOIX -  A No 9 international jersey from the collection of Clive Rowlands, Wales 1963-65. The jersey was swapped with the French scrum half and captain Pierre Lacoix after the final match of Wales' 1963 Five Nations campaign. A 5-3 loss in Paris saw Wales gather their first wooden spoon since 1949.

FRANCE B 1970 JERSEY -  A un-numbered player issue France B jersey from the collection of Clive Rowlands, Wales 1963-65. The jersey was exchanged with the France B coach Michel Celaya at the France B v Wales B match in Paris, 1970. An Adidas jersey which is an unusual design, the Adidas stripes are sewn into the jersey rather than on top of the material, (see illustrations)

IRELAND (v NEW ZEALAND) 1954 - JIM McCARTHY No 6 JERSEY - A No 6 Irish international jersey by Wolsey worn in the match against New Zealand (from the Bill Clark collection). The All Blacks overcame Ireland by 14 points to 3. According to Dave Fox's book on All Black tours "Jim McCarthy went over but was beaten by the bounce of the ball. Jim McCarthy of Blackrock College, Dolphin & Munster made 28 appearance for Ireland 1948-1955. He toured with the 1950 Lions.

IRELAND 1963 v WALES JERSEY - SYD MILLAR -  A No 1 Ireland international jersey from the collection of Clive Rowlands, Wales 1963-65. The jersey was exchanged with the Irish prop forward Syd Millar after the match at Cardiff Arms Park. Ireland were victorious 14-6 which meant that for the first time since 1928 Wales had lost both of their home Five Nations Championship matches. Syd Millar won a total of 37 caps for Ireland and toured as a player with the 1959, 1962, and 1968 Lions, playing in nine test matches. He went on to a successful coaching career with the 1974 Lions. He managed the 1980 Lions and the Irish national team at the inaugural Rugby World Cup in 1987. In 2003 he was elected Chairman of the International Rugby Board.

INTERNATIONAL REFEREES JERSEY - An international referees jersey worn by Nigel Williams of Neath for the New Zealand v England 19 June 2004 match in which he sent off the England lock Simon Shaw.

Over the years the town of Neath and it’s surrounding area have been blessed with more than it’s fair share of international referees, Albert Freethy (bottom left on illustration), Harold Phillips, Ivor David, Clive Norling & Clayton Thomas  (bottom right on illustration) to name just a few. The latest in this long line of men in the middle is recently retired Nigel Williams, who has the distinction of being Neath’s first professional rugby referee. Nigel is shown here sending of Simon Shaw in the New Zealand v England match in Auckland 2003. The irony being that the first ever referee to send off an international player was Albert Freethy from Neath who send off Cyril Brownlie of New Zealand against England in 1925.

Nigel took up refereeing at the age of 30. As a player he represented Wales U16s at scrum half and captained Wales in the first ever World U19s Sevens tournament. In a distinguished refereeing career he has taken charge of matches in the Six Nations Tournament, the Parker Pen Shield Final, the inaugural Celtic League final and Rugby World Cup 2003 including England's 111 - 13 victory over Uruguay.

SCOTLAND 1963 v WALES JERSEY - STAN COUGHTRIE -  A No 9 Scotland international jersey from the collection of Clive Rowlands, Wales 1963-65. The jersey was worn by the Scottish scrum half Stan Coughtrie in the infamous line-out match at Murrayfield. During this match there were 111 line-outs, many of them the result of Clive Rowlands kicking directly into touch. It's Clive's claim that they changed the laws to kicking direct into touch could only be done from inside the 25 yard line as a result of this match. Wales won the game 6-0, it was Clive's first victory in the scarlet shirt of Wales.

SOUTH AFRICA 1964 v WALES JERSEY - NELIE SMITH - A No 9 South Africa international jersey from the collection of Clive Rowlands, Wales 1963-65. The jersey was worn by the Springbok scrum half Cornelius Michael 'Nelie' Smith (7 caps 1963-65) in the 24-3 victory over Wales. This was Wales' heaviest defeat for 40 years, at three points a piece at half time the Springboks powerful forwards dominated possession to add 21 unanswered points in the second half including a try by Nelie Smith in this jersey. 1964 was the 75th jubilee year for the South African Rugby Union and the badge used on this jersey was only used during 1963 and 1964.

SOUTH AFRICA MATCH WORN JERSEY - CORNE KRIGE v NEW ZEALAND - at Dunedin, 10th July 1999. A jersey from one of the finest Springbok flankers to have worn the gold and green. Krige made his debut against Italy in 1999 captaining the side on his debut. This jersey is from his second international appearance also as captain against the All Blacks at Dunedin, the opening match of the 1999 Tri Nations series. Unfortunately, the Western Province man suffered a serious knee injury just 10 minutes into the fixture and was replaced. The All Blacks were comfortable winners, 28-0. 

The jersey, a short sleeved (trimmed) No 6 by Nike, size XXL was worn by Corne Krige, the Springbok captain and sold by Krige for his designated charity in his Western Province farewell week.

WALES 1947 JERSEY - BLEDDYN WILLIAMS - (22 caps, 1st cap v England 1947, last cap v England 1955) - Bleddyn Williams was captain of the last Welsh team to beat the All Blacks in 1953, he also captained Cardiff in their victory against the same All Blacks side and 3 times led the 1950 British Lions in tests on their tour of Australia & NZ. He was an elusive runner and scored 7 tries for Wales including one against the 1951 Springboks. This jersey was worn in the 1947 match for Wales against the touring Australian Wallabies and exchanged post match with Bleddyn's opposite centre Max Howell. Max took it back to Australia and years later framed it. Unfortunately it's seen a bit too much sun and the front is faded, the letter 'C' on the reverse too has faded. Bleddyn Williams jerseys are extremely rare, several we believe perished in a fire at the Taff's Well clubhouse. Max Howell went on to write over 50 books including "The Wallabies, The definitive history of Australian Test Rugby". He was awarded the 'Order of Australia' for service to education as a pioneer in the development of sports studies and sports science as academic disciplines, both in Australia and overseas and to the study of sports history.

WALES 1976 GRAND SLAM - JPR WILLIAMS - This No 15 Wales jersey was worn by JPR Williams during the 1976 Grand Slam. JPR famously shoulder barged the French winger Gourdon into touch during the Grand Slam decider against France. The team were led by Merve the Swerve, a former London Welsh team mate of JPR. The jersey was gifted to Hayden Cooke, pictured left who became friendly with JPR during the 1970s when he ran the pub which the London Welsh boys frequented after training. The jersey is by Umbro.

WALES FOURTH CONSECUTIVE TRIPLE CROWN - JPR WILLIAMS v ENGLAND - 17 March 1979. - JPR Williams jersey from the 1979 Triple Crown victory over England. The legendary full back never played on a losing side against England. This 27-3 victory for the men in red sealed a 4th consecutive Triple Crown for Wales. JPR who captained the side went off injured in the second half, needing 8 stitches in a calf wound. On came Llanelli's Clive Griffiths as a replacement to win his only cap. JPR won 55 caps for Wales over a 12 year period (1969-1981). His fearless attitude won him the respect of his team mates and opponents alike.

A replacement jersey believed to have been worn by Tom Shanklin in the Scottish match during the Welsh 2005 Grand Slam Season. Tom can be seen wearing the jersey in the photographs. Originally he was wearing the number 13 jersey and later we can see him in this un-numbered jersey.

WALES late 1930s - WELSH SCHOOLS - JACKIE BOWCOTT - 'C' JERSEY - A Wales or Welsh Schools jersey, letter C. The jersey belonged to one of the Bowcott brothers, Harry or Jackie, most likely it is a schools jersey that belonged to Jackie, The historian Tim Auty has researched the Bowcott's playing in the schools teams and says that Harry played in a number 6 jersey in 1926 while in the Yorkshire 1928 match the Welsh team wore lettered jerseys. Jackie Bowcott played for Welsh schools against France in 1928 & 1929 & against Yorkshire in 1929, we have not seen the team lists for any of these matches but believe that it is most likely that this was Jackie's jersey from one of these matches.

WORLD XV v BRITISH LIONS 1986 JERSEY -  A No 25 World XV  jersey from the collection of Clive Rowlands, Wales 1963-65. The jersey was exchanged with Bob Templeton of Australia who managed the World XV that faced the British Lions at Cardiff Arms Park in 1986. Clive was manager of the British Lions team and went on to manage them on the successful tour to Australia in 1989.
