NEW ZEALAND 1950 (v WALES) No 2

WRM-0949 -mmjyin.nz1950.nu2

NEW ZEALAND 1950 (v WALES) No 2

A New Zealand All Blacks no 2 jersey from the collection of Rees Stephens, Neath, Wales, Barbarians & British Lions At the time of his retirement in 1957 Stephens was the most capped Welsh forward with 32 appearances (not including 5 uncapped). Other milestones in his career included becoming the first father & son combination to captain Wales, (his father Glyn captained wales in 1919) and scoring Wales' first 5 Nations post war try against England in 1947 and playing in the last Welsh team to defeat the All Blacks in 1953. Originally we thought the jersey originated from the 1953 All Black tour but subsequently we received information that we believe defines it as a 1950 jersey. Rees did not play against the All Blacks in the 1950 test series so we must assume that he received it from his second row partner and club mate Roy John who played in all 4 tests. The jersey has a label which is faded, they is colour run onto the silver fern and collar, Rees has written his name to the back of the collar.

In the 1950 All Blacks v Lions test series No 2 was worn by

1st Test = W A Meates,   2nd Test = W A Meates, 3rd  Test = P Henderson, 4th Test = P Henderson

NOTES - The body of the jersey seems to be of a different type of material to the arms, there is a ribbed effect. Whether this has occurred in storage or not, I am unable to tell.
