NEW ZEALAND 1905 (v WALES)

A 1905 All Blacks jersey swapped with Welsh player Cliff Pritchard after the match with Wales. Cliff Pritchard was the Welsh 'Rover', the man who supplied the pass to Rhys Gabe who fed Teddy Morgan who scored the try. According to the local newspaper the Pontypool Free Press, Pritchard caught the train home to Pontypool and when he arrived in the station at 11.23 pm he was expecting it to be deserted. The station however was packed with well wishers. They then carried him shoulder high through the streets, It is thought he was wearing this jersey on his lap of honour around Pontypool.

no label but 'M' stamped into the jersey is common to all 1905 jerseys, it is believed that it stands for 'Mary', Mary Stubbs and her husband John founded J Stubbs, Hosiery Manufacturer, later to be known as the Manawatu Knitting Mills silver fern embroidered onto the jersey with a white felt patch background numbers were tacked on for each game and not sewn on, there is a snag in the cotton where a number has been pulled off the jersey at some stage during the tour.

1924 ALL BLACKS 'INVINCIBLES' JERSEY - GUS HART

The match worn 1924/5 All Blacks jersey of the tourists leading try scorer in Britain, Gus Hart. The jersey has originated from a collection of a leading sports promoter from the Llanelli area and is believed to have been worn in the match with the club in which Gus Hart scored a 60 yard individual try in an 8-3 victory for the All Blacks.

The All Black captain Cliff Porter remarked after the game "You gave us a harder game than Wales" (Wales were soundly beaten 19-0 at Swansea four days earlier). This was the last match for the tourists in Wales and they went on to complete the tour unbeaten with the record.

Augustus Henry Hart

(adapted from the Encyclopedia of New Zealand Rugby by Palenski, Chester & McMillan)

born 28.3.1897 Auckland - died 1.2.1965 Auckland

Represented NZ 1924-5, 17 matches, 1 test (v Ireland 1924) - Points for NZ 69 (23 tries)

First Class Record: Taranaki 1921, 1923 (Tukapa), North Island 1924, NZ Trials 1924

Educated at Sacred Heart College (Auckland) and New Plymouth Technical College, 1st XV 1916-17. After playing his early rugby as a five-eighth (outside half), Gus Hart switched to the wing when playing for the Tukapa club. A diminutive player, standing only 1.68m (5ft 6in) and weighing 62.5 kg (9st 12lb), he performed impressively in the 1924 All Black trials and cemented his place in the 1924-5 team by scoring 3 tries and a dropped goal in North's 39-8 victory over the South Island. Although Hart top scored with 20 tries on the British tour (including 4 each in the games against Cheshire, Yorkshire & Cumberland) he appeared in only one international against Ireland. Probably his finest try on this tour was against Llanelli when he gathered an opponents kick and ran 60 yards to score between the posts for Nepia to convert, giving the All Blacks victory 8-3

1924 All Black jerseys - We have identified three styles of jersey associated with the 1924 Invincibles from photographs and in person. In a pre-tour squad photo the players are wearing a jersey with NZ above and below the fern, in training they can be seen in a black numbered jersey with a white background, the fern looks to be more lateral and embroidered to the jersey. With the jersey used in matches the fern is more upright and is sewn on rather than embroidered. The number is small and white on a black background. A close up of several players prior to the England match at the end of the British leg of the tour shows obvious fraying to the edges of the fern.

NEW ZEALAND 1953 (v WALES) No 2 - RON JARDEN

A New Zealand All Blacks no 2 jersey from the collection of Rees Stephens, Neath, Wales, Barbarians & British Lions worn by the New Zealand All Black winger Ron Jarden. At the time of his retirement in 1957 Stephens was the most capped Welsh forward with 32 appearances (not including 5 uncapped). Other milestones in his career included becoming the first father & son combination to captain Wales, (his father Glyn captained wales in 1919) and scoring Wales' first 5 Nations post war try against England in 1947 and playing in the last Welsh team to defeat the All Blacks in 1953. It is from this match that we believe the jersey originates, after defeating the All Blacks we are certain that Rees would have sought out an All Black to obtain a conquerors trophy. Later on in the tour he played against the All Blacks, captaining the Neath & Aberavon combined team and for the Barbarians in the final fixture of the tour. The jersey has a label which is faded, they is colour run onto the silver fern and collar, Rees has written his name to the back of the collar.

NOTES - The body of the jersey seems to be of a different type of material to the arms, there is a ribbed effect. Whether this has occurred in storage or not, I am unable to tell.

This victory brought New Zealand within one victory of drawing level with Wales in this famous historical series. New Zealand won the match 6-0 with a Don Clarke penalty and a Bruce Watt drop goal. NEW ZEALAND ALL BLACKS - RICHIE McCAW No 7 CAP v SOUTH AFRICA

at Wellington 20th July 2002

NEW ZEALAND ALL BLACKS - RICHIE McCAW No 7 CAP v SOUTH AFRICA - at Wellington 20th July 2002. A jersey from one of the greatest, if not the greatest All Black of all time. Richie McCaw. Richie has 148 caps for New Zealand, captaining the All Blacks in 110 of those appearances. He was the first All Black to reach 100 international appearances for New Zealand.

This jersey is from McCaw's 7th cap and his first ever appearance against the Springboks in Wellington, on 20th July 2002. At the time this was the 2nd highest victory ever recorded for the All Blacks against the Boks in what is traditionally the most hotly contested international fixture in rugby union. In the same season McCaw famously wrestled pitch invader Peter van Zyl to the ground in the return fixture at Durban. That year he was voted the 'Newcomer of the Year' by the 'International Rugby Players Association'. In later seasons he has been nominated for the IRB Player of Year on eight occasions winning it a record three times.

The No 7 jersey by Adidas is size 48/50" chest with the match details embroidered (in black) to the arm. the Silver Fern and 'Richard McCaw 7th cap' are embroidered (in black) near the bottom hemline. The jersey was exchanged post match with Corne Krige, the Springbok captain and sold by Krige as a charity auction with the proceeds going to his designated charity in his Western Province farewell week.
