11 December 2020. - We had some lovely feedback this week after selling this press photo to Steve Sampson, pictured left as a baby in his mother's arms, I'll let Steve take up the story from here................ "My dad was well known because he played for London Scottish, was capped before and after the war as Scotland hooker and captained The Barbarians and London Counties. Bit of a pub quiz question. He was a Spitfire pilot, fighter ace. They weren't meant to last more than a few weeks. My mother worked for MI6 - hence The Standard etc carried it as a story with the line that "Margaret's work was so secret she can't even discuss it with her husband". We never got away with much as kids!" Footnote: Ralph Sampson won 2 caps for Scotland, both against Wales (1939 & 1947), he was awarded the DFC with bar and the French Croix de Guerre. |
