ENGLISH NATIONAL & RFU HISTORIES
"Holborn To Mayfair - Volume 2" by Eric Watts Moses |
||||
A private printing by the RFU of the committee meeting minutes 1959-1970 - an inside note reads "Published by the Rugby Football Union for the strictly private use of members of the RFU Committee only". There are 57 members of the RFU committe so we are assuming that the printing of this book may be limited to as little as 100 copies. An extremely rare book that can only originate from an official source within the RFU. We believe it was published without a dust wrapper. There is some splitting to the top of the spine, apart from this the book is in good condition. |

This edition has an lengthy introduction that provides a part analysis of the novel including the rugby match. It also identifies pupils whom Hughes based his original characters on. "Athletics & Football" by Montague Shearman - Badminton Library |
First published
in 1887, four editions exist of this early history
(1887, 1888, 1889 & 1894). The book is split
into two parts Athletics (265 pages) and Football (142 pages) this is a very good early history of all forms of
football, Rugby (40 pages), Soccer (30 pages), and includes
the different school games, Eton, Harrow, Winchester, as well as mediaeval
football. The work also includes chapters on rugby coaching. According the
the "Origin of Rugby Football" booklet that named Webb-Ellis as
the inventor of rugby this book was incorrect in its conclusion that the
game of Rugby started as folk football.

1897
- "The
Origin of Rugby
Football" Report (with appendices) of the sub-committee of the Old
Rugbeian Society - appointed in July 1895
|
|||
In
1887, Montague Shearman's book 'Athletics and Football' suggested that the
game of Football played in Rugby School was a direct descendant of 'original football'
the type played in towns across England. Subsequent editions including one
dated 1894 repeated this claim while the second edition of the Rev Marshall's
book on Rugby Union also dated 1894 claimed the game of Rugby Football was
invented by the Romans. The Old Rugbeian Society were
keen to discredit both opinions however Old Rugbeians had contributed many
chapters to Marshall's edited work and to discredit Marshall's book would have
placed doubt on their own contributions. Early investigations into the origin of
Rugby Football were completed by Henry Francis Wilson, before the Old Rugbeian
Society set up a sub-committee whose sole purpose was to place the origin of
Rugby Football at Rugby School.
The content of the report set about disproving Shearman's analysis of Rugby Football's origin and to confirm the origin of 'Rugby Football' as having been invented at Rugby School. This report was commissioned in 1895 and published in 1897. It is without doubt one of the most important, if not THE most important book in the recorded history of Rugby Football. It is also one of sports greatest confidence tricks. In naming the William Webb Ellis event as the origin of Rugby Football, the conclusion of this book even though it is blatantly incorrect is still championed by the governing body of the sport today. The report misrepresents the work of Matthew Bloxam, saying that he named Webb Ellis as the inventor of rugby. The truth however is that Bloxam, believed that Ellis was playing the same game that he played during his time at the school in the early 1800s. He only mentioned that Webb Ellis initiated the change in one of the rules, therefore the game that Webb Ellis played, a form of 'football' played only at Rugby School, existed long before Ellis was a pupil there. This game of ' football' should not be confused with modern day 'football' (Association Football) which was created in 1863. This book was published with a soft cover in very limited numbers. This edition has the former owner's name written on the front cover and a small corner missing from the top right. The former owner of this book being none other than Les Gracie whose greatest moment of triumph on the rugby field came exactly 100 years later than Webb-Ellis' is reputed to have ran with the ball. Captaining Scotland at Cardiff in 1923 Gracie scored a brilliant try with just two minutes remaining on the clock to record the first Scottish win in Cardiff since 1890. The crowd then carried him shoulder high from the field and the match is is recorded in the annals of rugby history as 'Gracie's Match' ARCHIBALD LESLIE “BILL” GRACIE was born in Colombo in October 1896, the son of missionaries. He was educated at Eltham College and Jesus College, Oxford. In December 1915 he joined the Inns of Court Regiment and in November 1916 he was commissioned into the King’s Royal Rifle Corps. "UNDERSTANDING THE ORIGIN AND EVOLUTION OF SPORT" Volume 1 – RUGBY UNION - by Dai Richards “The origin of Rugby Union explained” When Richie McCaw raised aloft the William Webb Ellis trophy after the 2015 Rugby World Cup final, few people would have thought about the schoolboy after whom the trophy was named. In his recent publication, sport historian Dai Richards explores the origin of Rugby Union and closely examines how sports evolve. He contends that the 1897 report by the Old Rugbeian Society that named Webb Ellis as the founder of rugby football was incorrect in its conclusion and that the origin of the sport has been misrepresented throughout written history. Through thorough research and analysis, the origin of Rugby Union is instead placed with the boys of Rugby School in the late 18th century. Published in a limited signed edition, this book is a fascinating read for anyone interested in the history of Rugby Union or the development of sport in general.
