"Holborn To Mayfair - Volume 2"  by Eric Watts Moses

A private printing by the RFU of the committee meeting minutes 1959-1970 - an inside note reads "Published by the Rugby Football Union for the strictly private use of members of the RFU Committee only". There are 57 members of the RFU committe so we are assuming that the printing of this book may be limited to as little as 100 copies. An extremely rare book that can only originate from an official source within the RFU. We believe it was published without a dust wrapper. There is some splitting to the top of the spine, apart from this the book is in good condition.

This is a gripping account of Nelson Mandela's political masterstroke during South Africa's 1995 Rugby World Cup. With the nation on the brink of civil war, Mandela seized on the sport once reviled by the country's blacks as a symbol of Afrikaner oppression and used it to unite his divided country. Morné du Plessis, the side's manager, urged his almost exclusively white team to learn the "black" national anthem for the tournament. By the time Mandela strode into Ellis Park stadium for the final between South Africa and New Zealand, to unanimous cries from both whites and blacks of "Nelson! Nelson!", This book was made into the film 'Invictus' with Morgan Freeman as Mandela & Matt Damon as Francois Pienaar. A secondhand paperback, as new.

by WS Douglas

published by Gay & Bird, London 1896

A previously un-catalogued* fictional tale, the story revolving around football played under 'Rugby rules'. The book opens with a discussion between Digby Harrison and Miss Champion in the grandstand about the placing of the ball and  players being allowed to charge the kicker. The plot then revolves around 'football' throughout the story.

The 186 page book was formerly part of the library of H.M.S Newcastle. The spine has a small part missing to the bottom. The inside cover has a Montevideo, Uruguay, booksellers label and a HMS Newcastle library sticker.

1897 - "The Origin of Rugby Football" Report (with appendices) of the sub-committee of the Old Rugbeian Society - appointed in July 1895

10.jpg (77028 bytes) 98-cover-finish-1600.jpg (106629 bytes) 07.jpg (320946 bytes)

In 1887, Montague Shearman's book 'Athletics and Football' suggested that the game of Football played in Rugby School was a direct descendant of 'original football' the type played in towns across England. Subsequent editions including one dated 1894 repeated this claim while the second edition of the Rev Marshall's book on Rugby Union also dated 1894 claimed the game of Rugby Football was invented by the Romans. The Old Rugbeian Society were keen to discredit both opinions however Old Rugbeians had contributed many chapters to Marshall's edited work and to discredit Marshall's book would have placed doubt on their own contributions. Early investigations into the origin of Rugby Football were completed by Henry Francis Wilson, before the Old Rugbeian Society set up a sub-committee whose sole purpose was to place the origin of Rugby Football at Rugby School.

The content of the report set about disproving Shearman's analysis of Rugby Football's origin and to confirm the origin of 'Rugby Football' as having been invented at Rugby School. This report was commissioned in 1895 and published in 1897. It is without doubt one of the most important, if not THE most important book in the recorded history of Rugby Football. It is also one of sports greatest confidence tricks. In naming the William Webb Ellis event as the origin of Rugby Football, the conclusion of this book even though it is blatantly incorrect is still championed by the governing body of the sport today. The report misrepresents the work of  Matthew Bloxam, saying that he named Webb Ellis as the inventor of rugby. The truth however is that Bloxam, believed that Ellis was playing the same game that he played during his time at the school in the early 1800s. He only mentioned that Webb Ellis initiated the change in one of the rules, therefore the game that Webb Ellis played, a form of 'football' played only at Rugby School, existed long before Ellis was a pupil there. This game of ' football' should not be confused with modern day 'football' (Association Football) which was created in 1863. This book was published with a soft cover in very limited numbers.

This edition has the former owner's name written on the front cover and a small corner missing from the top right. The former owner of this book being none other than Les Gracie whose greatest moment of triumph on the rugby field came exactly 100 years later than Webb-Ellis' is reputed to have ran with the ball. Captaining Scotland at Cardiff in 1923 Gracie scored a brilliant try with just two minutes remaining on the clock to record the first Scottish win in Cardiff since 1890. The crowd then carried him shoulder high from the field and the match is is recorded in the annals of rugby history as 'Gracie's Match'

ARCHIBALD LESLIE “BILL” GRACIE was born in Colombo in October 1896, the son of missionaries. He was educated at Eltham College and Jesus College, Oxford. In December 1915 he joined the Inns of Court Regiment and in November 1916 he was commissioned into the King’s Royal Rifle Corps. He was demobilized in 1920.

In 1921 he received his first cap from Scotland as a centre against France; he was to be capped again on a further twelve occasions, the last against France in Paris on 1 January 1924. His best-known International was the aforementioned against Wales at Cardiff Arms Park in February 1923 when, playing with Eric Liddell (of future Olympic and ‘Chariots of Fire’ fame), he scored the winning try. In Gracie’s own account of the event he later recalled: “Running, slightly diagonally to the left to go between Arthur Cornish (Wales) and “Codger” Johnson (Wales) whom I saw in a flash was in two minds – whether to go for me or run between me and Liddell and prevent me passing to the latter … As I went on, the way opened up for me and the tactics to be adopted were as plain as a pikestaff. Whether I dummied or not I do not remember but I was just able to swerve round my opposite number and in doing so saw I had Male (Welsh fullback) on the wrong foot and all I had to do was to carry on over the line. But here I nearly spoilt everything. The dead-ball line at Cardiff was desperately close to the goal line and in trying to touch down near the posts I recklessly ran along the dead ball line, only inches off it, till the close proximity of Cornish and Jenkins made me decide to drop on the ball”.

Gracie was commissioned as War Service Captain in July 1939, serving again with the King’s Royal Rifle Corps. He was Camp Commandant, Allied Forces Headquarters (British Section), North Africa and Italy, 1942-1945, retiring after the War. He died in Northampton in August 1982.

The book is sold together with the hardcover signed limited edition book  'Understanding the Origin and Evolution of Sport' - Volume 1 - Rugby Union' by Dai Richards which dedicates three chapters to the report giving an in depth analysis of its contents with additional information relating to the correspondence of the former pupils contained in the report. "UNDERSTANDING THE ORIGIN AND EVOLUTION OF SPORT"

Volume 1 – RUGBY UNION - by Dai Richards

“The origin of Rugby Union explained”

When Richie McCaw raised aloft the William Webb Ellis trophy after the 2015 Rugby World Cup final, few people would have thought about the schoolboy after whom the trophy was named. In his recent publication, sport historian Dai Richards explores the origin of Rugby Union and closely examines how sports evolve. He contends that the 1897 report by the Old Rugbeian Society that named Webb Ellis as the founder of rugby football was incorrect in its conclusion and that the origin of the sport has been misrepresented throughout written history. Through thorough research and analysis, the origin of Rugby Union is instead placed with the boys of Rugby School in the late 18th century. Published in a limited signed edition, this book is a fascinating read for anyone interested in the history of Rugby Union or the development of sport in general.
