"A History of County Cricket Glamorgan " by Wilfred Wooller

Glamorgan County Cricket Club was formed in 1888 and attained first class status in 1921, the last of seventeen counties to do so. The story of the club is in essence the history of cricket Wales, and in many aspects a summary of the problems and pleasures of the growth of many of the lesser cricketing counties. Wilf Wooller was Mr Glamorgan and he tells the story in his own forthright style with many personal memories, a second-hand hardback in good condition with a dust wrapper.

GLAMORGAN COUNTY CHAMPIONS 1948

Victory by innings in two days

By Malcolm Lewis (an excerpt from the Western Mail 1969)

A CHEERING, SINGING crowd of thousands thronged outside Cardiff General Station to greet Glamorgan on that August day in 1948 when the Welsh county won the championship for the first time in their history.

Cricket fans travelled from all parts of South Wales to give the champions a tumultuous reception on their return from Bournemouth where they had clinched the title by thrashing Hampshire by an innings and 115 runs. Tears welled from many eyes as the crowd surged forward to mob the players and herald them with song. Veteran off-spinner John Clay, the elder statesman of the team, spoke for the players in the absence of captain Wilfred Wooller, who had moved on to Lord's to play for the MCC. ''This is a 'red letter day' in the history of the county'', he said '' It is one which we shall never forget.''

Only a few had believed that Glamorgan would win the title that year. Wicket-keeper Haydn Davies was one of them. From late May he stuck to his belief that the Welsh team had all the ingredients for success. Most were like opening batsman Emrys ''The Rock'' Davies. Having spent 24 years with Glamorgan and suffered many disappointments, he refused to build up any big hopes. He refused to believe that the championship had come to Wales until he heard the news on the radio!

Glamorgan began to make their presence felt mid-way through June when they took over the leadership of the championship table. It was the first time they had occupied such an exalted position in 22 years of competition. They arrived at their historic match in Bournemouth on August 21 knowing that they would win the title if they could beat Hampshire and that Somerset managed to hold rivals Yorkshire at Taunton. But the heavy grey skies gave them further cause for anxiety. Glamorgan had been batting for only 10 minutes when down came the rain and the rest of the day was spent indoors, counting off the precious wasted hours. The skies cleared for Monday, but Glamorgan were left with just 11 1/4 hours in which to try to win the game.

Ordered skipper Wooller: ''I want 320 on the board by 10 to six.'' Emrys Davies and Arnold Dyson resumed the innings and with their mind constantly on the ticking clock they gave their side the solid start that was needed. Dyson was not out until the partnership was two short of a century and Willie Jones quickly took up where he had left off. The lunch-time score of 99 for two had mounted to 150 for two by three o'clock. The patient Davies left a few minutes later for 74, but Jones survived to find new run-hungry partners in Wooller Len Muncer and Norman Hever. By 5.32 pm. Glamorgan were all out for 315 and the target that Wooller had set them had been more or less accomplished.

Superb catch

The pitch was still plumb and the Welshmen were now left to worry about trying to dig out a couple of batsmen before close of play. It was then that Gilbert Parkhouse took the kind of superb catch that had made the team feared throughout the land. In Wooller's second over Neville Rogers played a confident leg-glance. The ball barely rose above the ground, but Parkhouse, a short leg, threw himself to his right and caught it-much to the batsman's astonishment. That catch was to have a critical bearing on the course of the match. From that moment Glamorgan established a huge psychological advantage over the Hampshire batsmen, who proceeded to prod nervously within the tight circle of crouching fieldsmen. Mesmerised by the spin of Muncer and Clay and intimidated by the closely set field, Hampshire collapsed on a wicket where Glamorgan had played their shots so confidently. By seven o'clock they had lost six batsmen and the Welsh county had practically caught up with the time that had been lost on the first day.

Clay ends it

Tuesday started in a tense atmosphere. In half-an-hour Hampshire were all out for 84 and made to follow-on but the Welshmen also had their thoughts on the events at Taunton. A telegram was received from Somerset: ''We're holding them. Hope you are there.''. Back went the Glamorgan reply: ''Hang on. We'll do it.'' And do it they did. In the four hours that were left Clay and Muncer got to work. At 10 minutes to three Clay spun through a delivery which struck Knott, the last batsman on the pads.

Up went the cry; ''Owzat!'' Dai Davies, the former Glamorgan all-rounder, was the umpire at that end. ''Out!'' he said and Glamorgan had won.

The crowd masses in front of the pavilion. Among them were many Welsh supporters, who, in typical style, expressed their feelings in song. The news came through from Taunton-Somerset had held Yorkshire-the title was Glamorgan's. John Clay, the man who had been with Glamorgan since the club's start in 1921, voiced his feelings with the words: ''It's a great day for me. We have waited for it a long time and I never expected it would come. ''I do not think it will happen again in my life-time, and that is not taking a short-term view.'' Mr Clay was not to know that 21 years later as President of Glamorgan County Cricket Club he was to witness the championship returning to Wales. Glamorgan were to triumph more than he ever dared to believe.
